In his book, Dr. Mora-Torres outlines how working and lower-middle-class communities have struggled to survive in one of the most expensive regions in the United States. Ethnic Mexicans, some of whom can trace their family history back to the founding of San Jose in 1777, represent a significant portion of the people pushed out of their ancestral homes by the region’s new economy. Their expulsion from their ancestral land signifies an end to their historical roots and families.

With more than two hundred years of fighting to resist and survive a harshly ever-changing environment, this work documents the resilience of these communities in navigating, rising up, and resisting countless challenges, especially during the years of the Chicano Movement.
