Overview
Explore the galaxy with Evergreen Valley College's Astronomy program and even earn an AA degree in the process.
Looking for something to do on a Friday night? Don't forget to head to our Observatory for Starry Evergreen, where you get to look up at the stars!
Observatory
Evergreen Valley College is home to the Montgomery Hill Observatory, which consists of two facilities: a classic dome observatory, which is the home of an 8" refractor telescope, and a contemporary roll-off-roof observatory, which is the home of a 14" Schmidt Cassegrain telescope.
The EVC Astronomy Department also offers Free Public Stargazing nights at the Montgomery Hill Observatory every 2nd Friday of the month (weather permitting). Join our online Meetup group "Starry Evergreen" to receive information about upcoming events and special astronomical occasions (registration is free).
For further information, please email Rick Francisco.
Classes in Astronomy
Students interested in Astronomy can satisfy general education requirements (GEs) or take an intro science course for non-science majors covering topics of modern Astronomy (ASTRO 010), an intro course focusing on the main physical processes governing the solar system formation and its evolution (ASTRO 014) or an intro course on the stars, galaxies and the origin of the universe (ASTRO 016).
Parents or educators who want to bring a group for a non-credit (free) astronomy lab introducing elements of Astronomy is also available (ASTRO 501)

A program map is a suggested semester-by-semester plan to help you complete the courses required for a particular degree or certificate. It is based on the major sheet for the particular degree or certificate you are interested in. It includes courses required for the major, general education and any necessary electives.
A program map is a representation of the major sheet. It includes the specific specialty courses in a major, general education courses and any necessary electives.
A major sheet includes a description of the program you are interested in, what you can expect to learn once you have completed the program (Program Learning Outcomes) and the specific specialty courses you will need to complete within a major.
Stem Tutoring
STEM Tutoring and other essential student learning services are available at either the Math and Science Resource Center (MSRC, MS-112; for Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics) or the Biology Skills and Tutoring Lab (AF-164; for Human Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Earth Science). Please check below for hours.
Tutoring at both centers is provided by Math and Science faculty, classified professionals and student tutors. The sole purpose of STEM tutoring is to provide extra, outside classroom assistance and guidance so students will become independent learners, and to succeed.
See the complete list of tutor schedule at evc.edu/tutoring.
