AMATYC National Math Contest
In the 2020s, EVC has been a national leader in the annual math contest amongst community
college students. Here are highlights from years past.
Contest Details
Round 1 is held during the fall semester, and round 2 during the spring semester.
A school is free to have any number of students participate and take the test, but
only the top 5 in the round become the school's official team for that round. Students
individually take a one-hour 20, question, multiple-choice exam that contains some
nonstandard challenging questions. In addition, students get to test their problem-solving
skills and see how they compare to others nationwide.

- The national winner will receive a $3000 scholarship.
- Problems from Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus & Trigonometry.
- Calculators allowed (but not the computer-type).

RECENT RESULTS
EVC has placed in the top-10 for the past four years: first (2023), eighth (2024),
second (2025) and third (2026)
2026 (3rd)
Evergreen Valley College math students placed third nationally in the two-round American
Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) contest. It is the fourth straight
year EVC has placed in the top-10 and the third time in four years in the top-three.
Brendan Gho (above right), who is a high school student with our ACCEL program, was the only EVC student to
place in the top three in each of the rounds. Brendan served this year as the treasurer of the Math Club, which prepares students
for the contest.
2025 (2nd)
Congratulations to Sarthak and Brady, two of our EVC Math students, who participated
in the AMATYC national math contest and led EVC to a second-place national finish.
Individually, Sarthak finished second, and Brady finished 12th. Sarthak also finished
second last year. Sarthak is headed to the University of Texas, and Brady is headed to Carnegie Mellon.
The entire team of Math superstars consisted of Pranav Ballapuram, Brady Gho, Sarthak
Jain, Nisa Keshwani, Van Le, Eric Nguyen, and Andy Xing. The EVC coordinators are
professors Laimi Cong-Huyen and Parran Vanniasegaram.
2024 (8th)
Congrats to our latest group of stellar math students who led EVC to its second-straight
top-10 finish at the AMATYC national math contest. They finished No. 8 overall in
the national competition amongst other community college students.
Let's take a moment to recognize the ten winners who have made us proud. These students,
enrolled in Math 072, 073, or 078, have shown exceptional talent and dedication. The
winners, in alphabetical order, are: Pranav Ballapuram, Brady Gho, Christina Huang,
Sarthak Jain, Nathan Legrimace III, Allan Ngo, Jaimie Nguyen, Kabir Rakshe, Vijay
Sharma, and Anuj Sheth. Notably, Pranav and Sarthak emerged as winners in both rounds
of the contest.
Thirty-seven EVC students took the test in the second round.
2023 (1st)
EVC placed first nationally with a total of 248 points over the Fall and Spring. They
had the top score in Fall 2022 and were fourth in Spring 2023. Ralph Cao had the top
individual score in the entire country and received a $3,000 scholarship. Other team
members were Akhil Agarwal, Huynh Duc Vo, Raman Khmel, Mihir Shevade, Anikait Paliwal, Aarav Navani and Kim Huong
Duong.
