WHAT DO CAMERON DIAZ, TIGER WOODS AND DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH HAVE IN COMMON?
Cameron Diaz suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm to a tiger shark, still surfs. Harriet Tubman suffered from vision impairment and seizures after a slave owner struck her violently. With practice and hard work, Tiger Woods was able to move past his childhood stuttering issues. At Evergreen Valley College, insights like these highlight Disability Awareness Month in October.
Robin Salak, who heads EVC’s Disabilities Support Program (DSP) and has overseen a 60% growth in the program since last year, says, “It’s a wonderful time for students and staff to learn more about people who have disabilities, which includes struggles, obstacles, strengths and successes.”
With that in mind, the DSP has planned a robust agenda, including a comedy show, a movie and pizza, a talk about canine companions and adaptive software demonstrations. Activities on the campus at 3095 Yerba Buena Road in San Jose include:
