Today's automotive technician must be thoroughly trained to utilize specialized test equipment and employ complex diagnostic and repair strategies. Because of the rapidly changing technology found in modern automobiles, American Honda, like many automotive manufacturers, believes the best way to obtain quality technicians is to train them from the ground up, using the latest vehicles, equipment, and curriculum—and do so locally, at a first rate training facility.
Evergreen Valley College offers the American Honda Certificate Program—a cooperative venture between American Honda, Bay Area Honda/Acura Dealerships, and Evergreen Valley College. Participating students will receive, in addition to their Honda/Acura-enhanced automotive training at EVC, factory Honda/Acura training credit—on over 100 different topics—and enjoy the benefits of on-site training sessions at Honda's state-of-the-art training facility in French Camp, CA.Imagine the confidence you'll have obtaining employment at a Honda dealership with hundreds of hours of factory-certified training already completed.
How does the program work?
Students enrolled in EVC's NATEF-certified auto program are eligible to enter the American Honda Certificate Program after completing the basic skills tract (Auto 102, 103, 119, 171, 173). Participating students will receive certified Honda training in conjunction with their regular automotive course of study.
What will I be learning?
American Honda Certificate Program students will receive training from EVC's factory-certified, ASE master technician/trainers, using the latest Honda vehicles, state-of-the-art tools, equipment, and service information. Much of the training consists of Honda's Individualized Skills Training modules, in which students work at their own pace with a partner, obtaining instructor assistance and evaluation as needed. Honda systems and technology are also included in the traditional program discussions and lab activities. Students also receive one week of training per year at Honda's state-of-the-art factory training center in French Camp, CA (students must provide their own transportation).

How long does it take to complete the program?
Completion of the program will normally take between four and five semesters, depending on your entrance qualifications and semester scheduling.
What does it cost?
Much more reasonable than "technical schools," California residents pay a low per-unit fee for classes. The total cost, including books, to complete the American Honda Certificate Program is approximately $1500. Enrollment fees are due at registration and are subject to change. Refer to the current class schedule for specific charges. Financial assistance is available.
Do I need to purchase tools?
Students attending EVC's automotive classes are provided with the necessary tools to complete all required lab activities. Full time students are eligible to purchase Snap-On, Mac, or Matco professional tool sets at a substantial discount (currently 55% off), and are encouraged to do so prior to seeking employment.
What will I receive when I finish the program?
Successful American Honda Certificate Program students will receive, in addition to their EVC/Honda certificate, hundreds of factory-training credit modules.
During the final semester of training, Honda students will be introduced, via internship opportunities, to local Honda dealers.
How do I get started?
Pick up an application from the admissions office. After you turn in your completed application, EVC support staff will arrange placement tests, general orientation, and counseling to plan the class schedule that is best for you. Admission to the American Honda Certificate program is by application (contact the Automotive Department), and on a space available basis.
Am I required to get a degree?
The Honda Certificate program does not require a degree; but you are encouraged to pursue academic classes. Taking classes such as math, science, and English will support automotive training and give you a chance to meet other students. An AS degree can be transferred to a university in order to pursue advanced degrees.
What majors are available should I decide to transfer to a university with an automotive technology degree?
Several majors are available such as a BS in Service Management or a BS in Industrial Technology. There is tremendous demand for graduates of these programs.
Are there opportunities available to graduates besides positions as automotive technicians?
At the dealership, many go on to become dispatchers, service writers, parts and service managers, service directors, and general managers. Honda corporate positions exist as instructors, zone managers, technical support, factory personnel, and numerous other positions.
